Question:        How long will it take to be housed?

The wait time for our housing programs is difficult to determine. In our Public Housing Program the wait time is dependent upon the availability of units resulting from move out. Wait time in the Housing Choice  Voucher Program is dependent upon existing clients dropping out of the  program so that we may reissue that Voucher. The average wait time  for both programs has been approximately 1,000 days or two and half (2 1/2) years. This wait time is for applicants with twelve (12) preference  points. Applicants with fewer preference points will wait longer.

Question:       What do you mean by preference?

Delaware County Housing Authority (DCHA) has HUD approved preferences for our programs. Preferences are provided to applicantsmeeting certain criteria in the form of a point system as follows:

1.        Since most jurisdictions have their own Housing Authorities to serve their residents, DCHA gives preference to applicants living or working in Delaware County outside the City of Chester. Nine (9) points are provided for these criteria.

2.        Three (3) points are assigned to working families or clients

             over 62 or disabled.

Therefore, twelve (12) points is the maximum number of points for an applicant applying for either Public Housingor the Housing Choice Voucher Program.

Question:     Can I transfer my application to or from another Housing Authority?

Applicants must apply to each individual Housing Authority separately.

Applications may not be transferred to or from another Housing Authority.

Question:    What if the Landlord where I live accepts Section 8 Housing

                     Choice Vouchers?

This is helpful only if you have already been issued a Housing Choice Voucher. It does not affect your wait time or status on the waiting list.

You will be notified by telephone or mail that we have reached your name on the waiting list. This is why it is important to update your application annually or whenever there is a change.

Question:     Can I live on one program and wait for another?

 Yes you can.
